Focus on Our Youngest Learners
This fall is a historic one all across California as we welcomed more Transitional Kindergarten students than ever before! As exciting as it is to see these four year oldson our campuses, it is important to remember that this historic step is the starting line rather than the finish line. While the logistics of adding a new grade can be challenging, it is the connection of expectations and instruction across the early grades that is the real game changer.
Here are a few examples from our P3CC Pilot districts of what it looks like to make coherence concrete:
District Spotlight: Central Union Elementary
This month we would like to highlight the work of Central Union Elementary! This team is new to the P3CC Pioneer collaboration and came together this summer to “launch” their work and be ready to hit the ground running this fall. The team is made up of teachers, site leaders and district leaders. Together, the team has already started uncovering components in their system that can better support the student literacy experience.
In partnership with Dr. Nancy Akhavan, Central Union is diving into the “Lit 6” of comprehensive literacy and is beginning to identify an area of focus for the collaboration that best creates equitable opportunities for students to build and encourage the value of literacy. They are hoping to create a system where students are held to high expectations and can access greater opportunities through their educational journey.
